A recent investigation has revealed that USB phone chargers sold online by major retailers, including Amazon, B&Q, and eBay, may pose significant safety risks to consumers. The watchdog group Which? purchased 15 phone chargers from seven different online outlets to assess their compliance with safety standards in the UK.

Testing showed that nine of the chargers were dangerously substandard, with defects severe enough to potentially cause electric shocks or even explosions. These findings raise concerns about the quality control and regulatory oversight of electronic accessories available through popular online marketplaces.

Following the public disclosure of the results, all retailers implicated in the inquiry stated they had taken action by removing the problematic products from their platforms. Some retailers acted proactively, while others responded directly to the watchdog’s report.

The investigation highlights ongoing challenges in ensuring the safety of electronic goods sold online, where counterfeit or poorly manufactured items can enter the market. Consumers are advised to exercise caution and purchase chargers from reputable sources that comply with recognized safety regulations.
