Government personnel were observed gathering evidence at the Lincoln Memorial’s drained Reflecting Pool last week, with photos showing activity at multiple locations where damage has been reported. The images, taken on July 15, depict individuals using surveying equipment, as well as taking photos and measurements at various spots, including areas where newly applied coating appeared to have peeled.

The Reflecting Pool had undergone a $14 million renovation completed in early June. However, just two weeks later, officials identified damage to the pool’s lining. Administration representatives have attributed the damage to acts of vandalism. President Donald Trump, in a post on the social media platform Truth Social, claimed the damage consisted of “slashes” extending 300 yards. Other officials have offered differing accounts regarding the nature and scope of the damage, contributing to ongoing uncertainty about its origins.

A detailed analysis published in recent days found peeling in at least seven distinct areas along seams where the pool’s lining had been applied. The material had been installed in large rectangular sections, and experts assessing the damage suggested the pattern was consistent with issues related to the application process, though they did not conclusively identify a specific installation error.

Following the identification of the damage, an FBI evidence team reportedly assisted the U.S. Park Police by visiting the site after the pool had been drained. While the precise identities of those seen in the photographs have not been confirmed, they are believed to be federal investigators involved in examining the damage.

Authorities continue to investigate the cause and extent of the deterioration, with no official determination yet made as to whether vandalism or installation problems are primarily responsible.
