Picogrid, a defense technology firm based in El Segundo, California, has secured $45 million in a Series A funding round led by Bessemer Venture Partners. The round also included participation from Washington Harbour, GSBackers, and existing investors such as Initialized Capital, Starburst Ventures, Credo Ventures, Giant Step Capital, Alumni Ventures, and several industry angels. The company plans to use the new capital to expand its product offerings, enhance integration capabilities across various operational domains, and scale deployments with the U.S. military, allied forces, and partner vendors.

Picogrid specializes in providing an open integration layer designed to connect modern military systems, encompassing sensors, autonomous platforms, and digital systems across land, sea, air, and space domains. Its hardware-enabled software ecosystem currently supports integration with over 100 defense systems from a range of both emerging and established vendors, including Skydio, Northrop Grumman, Echodyne, CX2, and Neros. This approach enables unified control and streamlined data flow, addressing challenges in interoperability among diverse defense technologies.

Zane Mountcastle, Picogrid’s chief executive, emphasized that while individual defense systems have advanced significantly, the connections between them have lagged behind. He noted that the recent funding would help meet existing demand from U.S. forces and allied partners, bolster the company’s infrastructure for next-generation defense technologies, and increase production capacity in facilities located in California, Oklahoma, and other parts of the United States.

David Cowan, a partner at Bessemer Venture Partners, highlighted the growing need for hardware-agnostic and interoperable infrastructure layers as autonomous systems become more prevalent across different operational domains. Bessemer, which manages $19 billion in assets and has a broad portfolio spanning various industries, supports Picogrid’s efforts to create a scalable integration platform that can accommodate multiple evolving defense applications.

Picogrid’s technology aims to provide a seamless interface among diverse military components, facilitating enhanced mission execution and operational flexibility globally. The funding marks a significant step for the company as it seeks to broaden its impact within the defense sector and among allied military customers.
