Tensions surrounding a pet pig in Dunedin's Corstorphine suburb escalated into a series of threats and police intervention this week. Authorities responded to reports late Monday of a group of men allegedly threatening vehicles and property with hammers, a dispute linked to ongoing disagreements on social media.

Acting Senior Sergeant Iain Notman said the pig had become a recurring issue in the area, frequently seen running loose. The situation intensified into a "Facebook feud" concerning the pig’s behavior and the owner’s control over the animal.

Around 11:30 p.m. Monday, police received multiple calls from Crammond Avenue, where 4 to 5 men reportedly brandished hammers and threatened local residents’ property. While the individuals carrying the hammers have not been publicly identified, police believe they are connected to a 36-year-old man who made threatening posts online about the pig owner.

Following an investigation, police detained the man responsible for the social media threats. Officers also engaged with all parties involved to assess the situation.

Acting Senior Sergeant Notman indicated the response by the group of men stemmed directly from the tensions appearing on Facebook, reflecting frustrations over the perceived lack of control by the pig’s owner. No further details were provided on the current status of the pig or any ongoing community measures to address the issue.
