A Malaysia Airlines pilot was arrested in Jakarta on Wednesday after arriving from Kuala Lumpur carrying a large quantity of MDMA, a narcotic commonly known as ecstasy, officials said. The 39-year-old pilot, identified only as MS, was found to be under the influence of both cocaine and MDMA during a urine test performed by Indonesian customs officers.

Authorities seized approximately 57 pounds (around 26 kilograms) of MDMA packed inside a suitcase. Indonesian officials reported that MS had been transporting the drugs in exchange for a payment of 50,000 ringgit (approximately £9,000).

Indonesia enforces some of the world’s most stringent drug laws. In recent years, the country has carried out severe penalties, including executions, for drug trafficking offenses. In 2015, for example, two Australian nationals were executed for attempting to smuggle heroin from Bali.

Malaysia Airlines has not publicly commented directly on the incident but issued a statement emphasizing its zero-tolerance policy toward misconduct. The airline announced it has initiated an internal investigation and will fully cooperate with both Malaysian and Indonesian authorities in the ongoing inquiry.
