A Flydubai flight traveling from Dubai to Israel was diverted to Saudi Arabia on Wednesday following emergency signals triggered amid an altercation between the pilots, Israeli officials said. The Boeing 737, Flight FZ1073, diverted over Jordanian airspace and landed at Tabuk airport in northwestern Saudi Arabia after transmitting multiple emergency codes, according to flight tracking data.
Initially, the plane sent a general emergency signal, followed by another indicating potential unlawful interference. However, Israeli authorities later clarified the incident was not a hijacking. An Israeli official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the emergency signals were sent amid a physical dispute between the flight crew. It remained unclear whether one of the pilots intentionally activated the alerts.
The unusual situation prompted consultations at the highest level of the Israeli government. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened security discussions, and Israel’s military chief, Eyal Zamir, conducted a situational assessment with air force commanders and other military officials.
Flydubai, which operates daily flights between Dubai and Tel Aviv, did not immediately comment on the incident. The route is frequented by Israeli travelers and connects two cities with significant commercial ties. Saudi Arabia and Israel do not maintain official diplomatic relations, making the diversion to a Saudi airport notable.
The aircraft’s course deviation and emergency communications raised initial concerns, but authorities dismissed fears of a hijacking after investigations found the source to be an internal dispute among the cabin crew. The incident highlights the potential challenges in managing in-flight emergencies, especially on flights crossing areas with complex geopolitical considerations.
