JOHOR BARU — Over 1,000 preschool and primary school students recently took part in a vibrant parade to mark the upcoming National Day, showcasing their patriotism with traditional clothing and waving the national flag, the Jalur Gemilang.

The event, organised by SK Mohd Khir Johari, was the school’s first-ever Merdeka parade and took place along a 1.5-kilometre route in Kampung Melayu Majidee. The headmistress, Siti Anita Misran, explained that the parade aimed to educate the children about the significance of Malaysia’s independence and to instill a sense of patriotism from an early age.

In addition to the young participants, the parade featured members of the school’s uniformed groups, including the Youth Cadet Corps, Boy Scouts, and Junior Firefighters. The procession was further enlivened by two colourfully-decorated vehicles, contributing to the festive atmosphere.

Parents also actively joined the event, with some dressing their children in traditional attire to celebrate Malaysia’s diverse heritage. Mas Ayu Ari Ardini, 44, a homemaker, brought her six-year-old daughter in traditional Iban dress to honour their cultural roots and to encourage pride in their identity.

Noraini Rahmat, a 40-year-old mother, expressed hope that initiatives like the Merdeka parade would continue regularly in schools, helping foster patriotism and a deeper understanding among young Malaysians of the importance of acceptance and respect for diversity.

The parade is part of ongoing efforts to engage the younger generation in national celebrations and to promote awareness of Malaysia’s multicultural society and its journey toward independence.
