Tampa Bay Rays pitching coach Kyle Snyder has played a central role in transforming the team’s pitching staff into one of Major League Baseball’s most formidable units, contributing to the Rays’ advancement to the World Series. The championship series between the Rays and Milwaukee Brewers is set to begin Friday night in Milwaukee.
Since joining Tampa Bay’s coaching staff in 2012 and becoming the major league pitching coach in 2018, Snyder has been credited with developing and refining a pitching corps that has consistently ranked among the league’s best. This season, the Rays led MLB in walks plus hits per inning pitched (WHIP) at 1.14, ranked fourth in opponents’ batting average at .229, and stood seventh in earned run average (ERA) with 3.70.
Manager Kevin Cash praised Snyder’s impact on the team’s pitching, emphasizing the coach’s dedication to individual players. “I don’t know if I could put into words right now the impact and importance he’s had to the pitchers here at the major league level, the entire pitching department throughout the organization,” Cash said. He added, “I think he’s the best in baseball at what he does, the care that he shows each individual pitcher, whether it’s in the offseason, spring training, and obviously during the season — the way that he builds relationships and creates that trust within each individual pitcher.”
Snyder, 49, had a playing career spanning parts of six seasons in the majors with the Kansas City Royals and Boston Red Sox from 2003 to 2008, compiling a 5.57 ERA across 93 games. He was part of the Red Sox organization when they won the World Series in 2007. After retiring as a player, Snyder transitioned into coaching and began working in the Rays’ minor league system before advancing to the major league staff.
Under his guidance, Tampa Bay’s pitching staff has become known for its consistency and effectiveness, helping the franchise reach the World Series for just the second time in its history. With the best pitching numbers in the league this season, the Rays approach the upcoming series with a staff that has been finely honed by Snyder’s coaching philosophy and individualized approach.
