Kuwait is undertaking a comprehensive initiative to modernize its postal sector, aligning services and regulations with technological advancements and the evolving needs of customers. This effort was highlighted on October 9, World Post Day, which underscores the significance of postal services in connecting Kuwait domestically and internationally while supporting trade and communication.
The country’s postal system has a long history, dating back to the establishment of its first post office on January 21, 1915. Kuwait began managing its domestic postal services independently in 1958, followed by international services in 1959. The nation became a member of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) in 1960, marking its integration into the global postal community.
Meshal Al-Zaid, acting undersecretary at the Ministry of Communications, outlined the ministry’s plans to enhance the postal sector’s efficiency and service standards. Central to these efforts is the preparation of a new postal law intended to replace the existing legislation from 1970. The updated legal framework will better accommodate contemporary postal operations, technological developments, and service improvements, while providing an appropriate regulatory environment for future growth.
The ministry also intends to issue a tender to engage an international consultancy specializing in the postal sector. The consultancy will evaluate the current system and assist with transitioning the postal service toward a public-private partnership model. This strategy aims to leverage global expertise and best practices to improve operational efficiency, upgrade technological infrastructure, and introduce new postal and logistics services tailored to the demands of e-commerce and both individual and business customers.
Al-Zaid emphasized that legislative reform and international consultation are components of an integrated vision to build a more efficient, sustainable postal sector that maximizes economic potential, maintains service continuity, and enhances the customer experience.
World Post Day, established by the UPU in 1969, commemorates the organization’s founding on October 9, 1874. The day serves to raise awareness about the critical role postal services play in social and economic development worldwide. In Kuwait, it provides an opportunity to spotlight the postal sector’s ongoing evolution and its importance in supporting trade, communication, and logistics.
