Qatar’s Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani held separate telephone conversations on June 1 with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis. The discussions focused primarily on ongoing mediation efforts led by Pakistan aimed at de-escalating tensions between the United States and Iran.
During the call with Araghchi, Sheikh Mohammed expressed Qatar’s firm support for initiatives seeking a comprehensive resolution to the crisis. He stressed the importance of all parties engaging in constructive dialogue to achieve lasting peace and regional stability. The prime minister also highlighted the critical nature of maintaining freedom of navigation, cautioning against any attempts to close or leverage the Strait of Hormuz as a means of exerting pressure. He warned that such actions could exacerbate the crisis and threaten the security interests of states in the Gulf region.
The talks with Cassis similarly emphasized advancing bilateral cooperation between Qatar and Switzerland alongside discussions on the Pakistan-led mediation process. Both officials underlined the necessity of coordinated support to facilitate diplomatic efforts aimed at de-escalation, thereby reinforcing security and stability in the broader Middle East.
Sheikh Mohammed reiterated the need for all involved stakeholders to respond constructively to the mediation attempts, encouraging diplomacy as the preferred path to resolving underlying issues and achieving sustainable peace. These conversations come amid growing international concern over rising tensions in the Gulf and ongoing instability in Lebanon, which were also topics addressed during the calls.
Qatar continues to position itself as a constructive regional actor, advocating for dialogue and multilateral engagement to address the complex challenges facing the Middle East.
