Putrajaya — Malaysia’s Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim emphasized the need for a younger generation equipped with determination, understanding, and knowledge to take on the responsibilities of national development. Speaking at the launch of the 2026 Madani Fellowship Programme on September 30, Anwar highlighted the importance of youth leadership in addressing the country’s complex and diverse challenges.

The Madani Fellowship, rebranded from the Perdana Fellowship following a Cabinet decision in June, is designed as a youth leadership initiative that pairs participants with senior government mentors. This four-month program offers 76 Malaysian youths aged between 23 and 29 placements across various ministries and government agencies, providing them with direct exposure to national policies and the workings of the country’s administrative system.

Anwar, who also holds the position of Finance Minister, noted that public service requires navigating a multifaceted landscape shaped by Malaysia’s ethnic, religious, and regional diversity. He encouraged participants to fully utilize the mentorship and learning opportunities, including observing ministry operations and parliamentary sessions. While most fellows are assigned to specific ministries, he proposed allowing them to rotate through different ministries to broaden their understanding of governance.

“You will meet your mentors who are ministers and will, of course, be very busy. But I believe you can do it,” Anwar said, urging the youths to deepen their knowledge and engage widely across the government.

The Prime Minister also affirmed that the Cabinet’s strong backing of the programme reflects the government’s commitment to nurturing future leaders capable of managing the country’s diverse demands.

Youth and Sports Minister Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari, present at the event, described the Madani Fellowship as a platform to identify and develop young talents for leadership roles while instilling “Madani values.” These values aim to cultivate a generation that is physically, intellectually, mentally, and spiritually resilient. He expressed hope that participants would maximize the learning opportunities offered and ultimately contribute positively to national development.

Deputy Prime Ministers Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, as well as Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar and other Cabinet ministers, also attended the launch.

The initiative represents part of the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen youth participation in governance and ensure that future leaders can navigate Malaysia’s social and administrative complexities effectively.
