Oman’s Sultan Haitham bin Tarik met with Qatar’s Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani, on June 24 to discuss bilateral cooperation and regional developments, including recent diplomatic efforts following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the United States and Iran. The meeting took place amid ongoing concerns about security and stability in the Gulf region.

During the discussions, both leaders exchanged greetings and expressed wishes for continued health and prosperity for their peoples. They explored ways to strengthen cooperation across various fields to serve their mutual interests. The talks also included an emphasis on enhancing diplomatic ties and promoting joint progress.

A key part of the conversation centered on the regional ramifications of the US-Iran MoU. Both sides highlighted the importance of sustained dialogue and peaceful solutions to advance security in the Gulf. Sheikh Mohammed reiterated Qatar’s support for the negotiations between the US and Iran, underlining that a successful outcome would contribute to regional stability and open further opportunities for cooperation, development, and shared prosperity.

The security of maritime routes, particularly the Strait of Hormuz, was a significant topic during the talks. Ensuring the freedom of international navigation in the strait, which is a vital chokepoint for global energy shipments, was identified as crucial. Both parties stressed the necessity of keeping the strait accessible to maritime traffic in accordance with international law to maintain regional and international confidence.

In addition to meeting with Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, Sheikh Mohammed also held talks with Oman’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sayyid Badr al-Busaidi. Their discussions reinforced commitments to strengthen bilateral relations and further collaborate on initiatives aimed at enhancing regional peace and stability.

The meetings underscore the continued diplomatic engagement between Qatar and Oman as both countries navigate a complex regional environment marked by strategic challenges and shifting alliances. The dialogue reflects a shared interest in fostering a stable and secure Gulf region through cooperation, dialogue, and adherence to international norms.
