Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Qatar, HE Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, met with Sierra Leone President Dr. Julius Maada Bio in New York on Sunday to discuss bilateral relations and regional security issues. The leaders reviewed cooperation between their countries and explored opportunities to strengthen ties across various sectors.
During the meeting, Sheikh Mohammed addressed the ongoing crisis affecting the region, outlining a phased approach to resolving it. He indicated that initial discussions would focus on security and de-escalation, followed by considerations related to energy supplies, shipping routes, and the status of investment initiatives. He underscored the importance of establishing a regional framework rooted in respect for state sovereignty, emphasizing that no country should threaten another.
Sheikh Mohammed reaffirmed Qatar’s commitment to acting as a mediator in the crisis, highlighting the nation’s role as a steadfast energy supplier and a long-term investor in regional stability. He described recent developments as a seismic event with ripple effects extending beyond the immediate area, challenging established notions of security and stability.
The Prime Minister noted that Qatar has actively engaged with regional and international partners to maintain communication channels, reduce tensions, and support diplomatic efforts. He highlighted the significance of economic resilience, which relies on institutional strength, infrastructure, preparedness, and strategic partnerships established well before crises emerge. Despite disruptions and increased costs caused by the crisis, Qatar’s financial system remained stable and business operations continued without interruption.
Sheikh Mohammed credited this resilience to years of strategic planning and leadership under the guidance of His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Amir of Qatar. He affirmed that Qatar’s economic fundamentals remain strong, pointing to the ongoing expansion of the North Field gas project as a key element in bolstering Qatar’s position as a reliable energy provider.
The Prime Minister also emphasized that energy underpins Qatar’s strength, while diversification forms the cornerstone of its economic resilience, and technology represents its future. Through these efforts, Qatar intends to continue supporting regional stability and development while navigating the challenges posed by the current crisis.
