Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has extended his congratulations to Saleumxay Kommasith on his recent appointment as the Prime Minister of Laos, inviting him to visit Singapore to further strengthen bilateral ties. Saleumxay assumed office on October 5 after receiving unanimous support from all 158 members of the Lao National Assembly. He succeeded Sonexay Siphandone, who transitioned to the role of president of the National Assembly.

In a letter to the new Lao leader, PM Wong described the relationship between Singapore and Laos as “very good and warm,” noting that cooperation between the two countries has deepened significantly in recent years. Key areas of collaboration include energy, carbon credit initiatives, and efforts to combat transnational crime.

Highlighting the Lao PDR-Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore Power Integration Project as a landmark achievement, PM Wong pointed to the initiative’s role in enhancing regional energy connectivity. Launched in 2022, the project enables Singapore to import hydropower generated in Laos by transmitting electricity through Thailand and Malaysia. This has been identified as a step forward in fostering sustainable energy ties and regional integration.

PM Wong also reaffirmed Singapore’s ongoing commitment to supporting Laos’ development. He underscored various training programs facilitated by the Singapore Cooperation Programme and the Initiative for ASEAN Integration, which have contributed to capacity building in Laos. This year marks 25 years of development cooperation between the two nations, and Singapore intends to continue aligning its support with Laos’ evolving development priorities.

In closing his letter, PM Wong invited Saleumxay to make an official visit to Singapore, expressing eagerness to collaborate closely to advance the bilateral relationship.
