Slovenian cyclist Tadej Pogacar withdrew from the 2026 Vuelta a España following a crash on the eighth stage of the race on August 29. The incident occurred near the finish line of the 171-kilometer stage from Puçol to Xeraco, which was considered flat and favored sprinters.

Pogacar, who was leading the race by nearly four minutes over Enric Mas of Movistar before the stage, crashed while riding within the peloton as riders jostled for position ahead of a climb with just over 30 kilometers remaining. Television footage and eyewitness reports showed Pogacar falling hard to the ground, sustaining injuries to his left arm, shoulder, and face. Despite briefly attempting to remount his bike, he ultimately abandoned the race and was assisted into an ambulance by medical staff.

The 27-year-old rider, a five-time Tour de France champion and the 2024 Giro d’Italia winner, was aiming to become the ninth male cyclist in history to win all three Grand Tour events. He had not competed in the Vuelta since his debut in 2019 and was widely regarded as the favorite to claim the overall title in 2026. With his withdrawal, Enric Mas assumed the race leader's red jersey.

Pogacar’s attempt to complete a rare Grand Tour treble was halted unexpectedly, marking his first abandonment in a stage race. His crash also makes him the first rider leading the Vuelta to abandon the race due to a crash since Igor Anton in 2010.

The stage was ultimately won by French sprinter Bryan Coquard. The Vuelta will continue toward its conclusion in Granada on September 13, with the field now open as riders vie for the overall victory following Pogacar’s exit.
