A 54-year-old man detained by the New York Police Department on drug charges died following a medical emergency at a Brooklyn precinct, police officials reported. Reginald Newkirk was held at the 67th Precinct in Flatbush while awaiting transfer to Criminal Court for arraignment when he experienced a rapid health decline.

Emergency responders transported Newkirk to a hospital shortly before 2:15 p.m. on Saturday after he exhibited an unspecified medical condition. He remained hospitalized and was pronounced dead on Sunday. Authorities have not yet released the cause of death.

Newkirk was arrested on Friday for criminal possession of a controlled substance, according to court records.

This incident follows similar cases involving detainees suffering medical issues while in custody. In September, a 46-year-old detainee died after a medical episode in the Central Courts Building in Downtown Brooklyn. Earlier in April, Hector Sierra, 51, and Zamiqua Miller, 33, both died after experiencing withdrawal symptoms while in NYPD custody.

The NYPD’s Force Investigation Division has been assigned to investigate Newkirk’s death. Officials have yet to provide additional details regarding the circumstances leading to his medical emergency.
