Ryan Baker was discovered hiding crack and cocaine inside a car after being stopped by police in Gateshead on October 29, 2023. Following the initial vehicle search, which found no narcotics but did uncover £145 in cash, a police dog was brought to the scene and indicated the presence of drugs concealed within the car’s panel. Authorities subsequently recovered 42 bags of crack cocaine and 17 bags of cocaine with an estimated street value of up to £1,180.

Baker, 34, of Park Terrace, Swalwell, Gateshead, appeared before Newcastle Crown Court where he admitted to possessing the drugs with intent to supply. Alongside the vehicle search, officers carried out a search of Baker’s residence, uncovering drug paraphernalia including scales. His mobile phone also contained messages suggesting involvement in drug distribution.

The court heard Baker has a history of convictions, with nine previous offences on record. He pleaded guilty on the grounds that he was struggling with a severe cocaine addiction at the time, which led him to accumulate debt with his dealer. Baker stated that he was holding the drugs to reduce this debt rather than for direct sale.

In sentencing, the judge imposed a 16-month prison term, suspended for 16 months, and ordered Baker to complete 200 hours of unpaid work. The court also noted that since the offense, Baker has changed his circumstances, currently working as a wind turbine technician and living in a more stable family environment, with support from his partner.
