A police dog has been credited with helping to locate a missing elderly man who became trapped in brambles on the Isle of Wight. The man, reported to be in his eighties, was found after wandering off while disoriented and calling for help during a recent heatwave, when temperatures reached the high 20s Celsius.

The incident began when a member of the public alerted authorities after encountering the confused pensioner, who was suffering from dehydration. Unable to communicate effectively with the man, the witness reported him missing when he moved away from the scene. Police then deployed Bella, a German shepherd police dog, along with her handler, PC Gemma Johnson, to track the man’s scent.

Bella tracked the pensioner almost one mile through the countryside, eventually locating him in a field where he had fallen and become wedged in dense undergrowth. The man was unable to free himself or move to safety. Officers promptly rescued him from the brambles and took him to hospital as a precautionary measure.

The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary praised Bella and her handler for their efforts. A spokesperson highlighted the effective teamwork between the dog and PC Johnson, noting Bella’s skill and determination in combination with the handler’s ability to interpret the dog’s behavior throughout the search. The partnership was described as instrumental in ensuring the vulnerable man was found and brought to safety.
