The Supreme Court has dismissed an interim appeal challenging a recent order by the Bombay High Court concerning police inspector promotions. The High Court’s interim directive, issued on April 29, 2026, called for the temporary implementation of promotions to the police inspector rank, pending the final resolution of a longstanding legal dispute over reservation policies.
This dispute, which has been ongoing for eight years, centers on the application of reservation quotas in the promotion process for police inspectors. The Supreme Court’s refusal to stay the High Court’s order means that promotions under both the open category and reserved categories may proceed on a provisional basis.
However, these appointments remain subject to the final verdict in the "Vijay Ghogre" case, presently before the Supreme Court. Until the concluding judgment is rendered, the promotions will be considered tentative.
The legal conflict surrounding the promotion procedure prompted judicial intervention to ensure adherence to prescribed rules and to address concerns raised by various stakeholders. With the Supreme Court’s decision, authorities are now authorized to advance the promotion process while awaiting a conclusive settlement of the issue.
