A nine-year-old girl died after being found injured at an industrial estate in Arbroath in the early hours of Monday, prompting a police investigation. The incident occurred at approximately 12:02 a.m. at the Elliot industrial estate, where the child had been camping with her family. She was taken to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee but later succumbed to her injuries.

Police Scotland confirmed that her death is being treated as suspicious. A 35-year-old man, described as white and British, was arrested in connection with the case. Authorities stated that the man was known to the girl and there is no indication that police are seeking any further suspects.

The family, who are from West Yorkshire, had been camping in the area prior to the incident. Police have increased their presence around the Elliot industrial estate as inquiries continue, with officers maintaining a cordon and a forensic tent set up near the scene. Flowers were placed close to the police tape by members of the community.

Residents expressed shock and sadness following the news. Lois Speed, a councillor for Arbroath East and Lunan, described the situation as “heartbreaking” and conveyed sympathy for the family and those affected. Local residents highlighted the close-knit nature of the community and spoke of their devastation, with some noting that the campsite appeared unusual given its location on the edge of an industrial area.

Detective Inspector Mike Ness of the major investigation team said the police remain focused on the case and encouraged anyone with information to come forward. Authorities have assured the public that the increased police activity is to provide reassurance as investigations proceed.
