An off-duty Chicago police officer discharged his firearm during a physical altercation early Sunday in the Little Village neighborhood, resulting in two men being injured, authorities said.

The incident occurred shortly before 1 a.m. on the 2600 block of West 24th Street, when the officer stopped his vehicle to speak with a group gathered on the sidewalk. According to Chicago police, one man approached and struck the officer in the face. In response, the officer fired his weapon, shooting the man twice.

Following the initial shots, the officer drove a short distance and exited his vehicle again to fire additional rounds toward the group, police reported. The man who was shot twice was transported to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was listed in fair condition and remained in police custody. Another individual from the group sustained an arm injury, though authorities have not confirmed whether it was caused by gunfire. He also sought treatment at Mount Sinai and was reported to be in good condition.

The officer involved received treatment for a minor facial injury sustained during the altercation and was also taken to a hospital. Officials indicated he was in good condition and will be assigned to routine administrative duties pending the outcome of an investigation.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability has launched a probe into the incident. No further details were immediately available as authorities continue to review the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
