A police officer was struck on the head with his own baton during a stop-and-search incident in Handsworth, Birmingham, on July 3. The confrontation involved two officers from West Midlands Police and a man wearing a black hoodie, who resisted arrest before seizing the baton and hitting one officer.
Video footage of the incident shows the officers attempting to restrain the man, who clung to railings while officers instructed him to stop resisting and to get on the ground. During the roughly 90-second struggle, one officer warned that he would deploy a Taser if the man continued to resist. Despite these efforts, the man managed to grab a baton that had fallen to the ground and struck one officer over the head before fleeing the scene on an electric bike.
The injured officer was taken to hospital for treatment and has since been discharged. West Midlands Police are investigating the incident and have issued a request for information about the suspect, identified as 30-year-old Mahroy Stephenson from the Bartley Green area of Birmingham.
Stephenson is wanted on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent in connection with the July 3 incident. He is also wanted on suspicion of assault related to an earlier event on June 21.
Authorities have not provided additional details about the circumstances leading to the stop and search or whether Stephenson has been located. The police continue to appeal to the public for information to assist with their investigation.
