A police officer was shot in the foot after approaching two suspects in Nottingham city centre early Sunday morning. The incident occurred around 4:50 a.m. near Angel Row, close to the city’s pedestrianised central square, according to Nottinghamshire Police. The officer was taken to hospital and is in stable condition.
The suspects, described as a man and a woman, fled the scene, but police have reportedly identified them and continue to search for their whereabouts. A firearm, believed to be a sawn-off shotgun, was recovered from the scene. The road near Angel Row, which is lined with shops and restaurants, remained closed into the afternoon as forensic teams examined the area.
Assistant Chief Constable Claire Rukas described the event as “a shocking incident and a sobering reminder of the dangers faced by officers as they protect the public.” She also expressed gratitude to members of the public who assisted the officer before emergency responders arrived. Rukas added that detectives were making “good progress” in the investigation and stressed that incidents involving firearms are extremely rare in Nottingham. At this stage, police have indicated there is no evidence of a wider threat to the public.
Nottinghamshire Police and Crime Commissioner Gary Godden echoed the rarity of such incidents and thanked bystanders for their support. The Police Federation of England and Wales, representing rank-and-file officers, said the shooting underscored the daily risks faced by police.
Local officials responded with messages of concern and reassurance. Labour MP for Nottingham East Nadia Whittome extended her sympathy to the injured officer and his family, describing the event as “truly shocking.” Nottingham city council leader Neghat Khan expressed shock and sadness, emphasizing the city’s continued commitment to safety and highlighting the efforts of police and community protection officers.
Authorities have urged anyone with information related to the shooting to contact Nottinghamshire Police at 101, quoting incident number 106 of October 18, 2026. Crimestoppers also offer an anonymous hotline at 0800 555 111. A heightened police presence remains in the area as officers work to gather further evidence and assist with ongoing inquiries.
