A police officer in eastern Thailand surrendered to authorities on Thursday following an overnight standoff after allegedly shooting his wife at a nursery where she taught.

Tatsapong Tongthat, an officer stationed at Bang Lamung police in Chonburi province, reportedly shot his wife on Wednesday morning inside the Nongplalai Municipal Kindergarten, located about 93 miles southeast of Bangkok. Following the incident, he fled to his residence, where police quickly surrounded the property and engaged in an 18-hour standoff before Tatsapong gave himself up.

Officials confirmed that all 44 students present at the nursery were unharmed and were evacuated promptly alongside the teaching staff after the shooting. The circumstances leading to the shooting remain under investigation.

The incident has intensified ongoing concerns about school safety and gun violence in Thailand. Earlier this month, a separate shooting at a high school and family home resulted in eight fatalities when a 14-year-old opened fire. In response to the recent events, there have been growing calls for stronger firearm regulations nationwide. The Thai government has announced a review of existing gun control policies in an effort to address these concerns.
