A teenager died and three others were hospitalized following a car crash in south Bristol early Tuesday morning during a police pursuit. The incident occurred shortly after 4 a.m. on the A37 Wells Road near the junction with Airport Road and Wootton Park.
According to Avon and Somerset Police, the collision involved a Nissan Juke, which was being pursued by an unmarked police vehicle. The Nissan collided with an Audi A3, driven by a member of the public. The teenage boy, who was a passenger in the Nissan, died at the scene. The driver of the Nissan and two other passengers were taken to hospital with injuries.
Police confirmed that the unmarked car was not directly involved in the crash, but given the police contact preceding the incident, the case has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) for review.
In the aftermath, officers arrested a 17-year-old boy on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. Investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances leading to the pursuit and subsequent collision. Authorities have not yet released information about whether the Nissan's occupants were attempting to evade police or the reasons for the initial stop.
The IOPC referral follows standard procedure in cases where a death occurs after police contact. The agency will conduct an independent examination of the police conduct during the pursuit and any contributing factors to the crash.
Local residents near the crash scene were reportedly disturbed by the early morning incident, which prompted a police response and subsequent road closures in the area.
The police continue to appeal for any witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage of the chase or collision to come forward to assist with their inquiries.
