Police have located a man who missed a scheduled court appearance following an assault at his son’s funeral in Middlesbrough. Gye Worthy, 40, was due to be sentenced after admitting to assaulting a celebrant during the cremation service for his 17-year-old son, Cole Worthy.
The teenager died in August in a multi-vehicle collision on the A66 near Middlesbrough, which also claimed the lives of four others. The incident involved a collision between their car and a police vehicle, resulting in the deaths of officers Tom Clough, 38, and Matthew Blades, 37.
During the funeral at Teesside Crematorium, Gye Worthy became involved in an altercation with Paul Maull, the man conducting the service, reportedly in frustration over not being mentioned early enough in the eulogy. Worthy later pleaded guilty to charges of assault and resisting arrest connected to the incident.
Worthy had been scheduled for sentencing at Teesside Magistrates’ Court but failed to appear. He was also set to attend the court on the same day in relation to a separate matter, having admitted to stealing wine from a shop.
Cleveland Police confirmed on Tuesday that Worthy has been found. However, no new date has yet been set for his court proceedings. Authorities have not released further details about the circumstances surrounding his absence or current status.
