A political aide to Washington, D.C., mayoral candidate Janeese Lewis George came under scrutiny for expressing support on social media for Luigi Mangione, a suspect arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of a healthcare executive.

Makia Green, who serves as political director for George, posted on the social media platform Threads on December 11, 2024, using the hashtag #freeluigi, just days after Mangione’s arrest. Authorities apprehended Mangione on December 9 at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, following a five-day, multistate manhunt. The 28-year-old is charged with killing Brian Thompson, the CEO of United Healthcare, who was shot on a Manhattan sidewalk.

In a subsequent post, Green shared a list titled “Things that piss me off,” which included a mention of “United health care,” accompanied by a video showing her making an obscene gesture towards the company. She indicated frustration with difficulties in accessing primary care services.

Mangione is scheduled to stand trial on September 8.

A Democratic insider familiar with the campaign described Green as a “close confidant” to Janeese Lewis George, who is known for her progressive platform and has been compared to Mayor Muriel Bowser. The reason behind Green’s posts remains unclear, and she has not publicly commented on her statements. The case continues to attract attention as the trial date approaches.
