A recent poll has found that British adults typically keep around £822 in cash at home, despite the increasing use of contactless cards and digital payment methods. The survey, conducted among 2,000 adults, highlights a continued preference for holding physical money alongside digital finances.
The study revealed that 35 percent of respondents store their cash in a purse or wallet at home, making it the most common method of safekeeping. Other popular locations include safes, used by 14 percent, while a small portion, around 3 percent, still keep money hidden under their bed or mattress.
The reasons for keeping cash on hand vary. About 34 percent of those surveyed said they retain cash for emergencies, and 26 percent use it for small everyday purchases. An equal proportion value having immediate access to physical money. Additionally, 21 percent prefer to keep some cash at home in case they are unable to access online banking services.
Despite holding cash at home, Britons also maintain substantial funds in other financial accounts. The poll indicated that the average amount held in savings accounts, Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs), and current accounts combined stands at approximately £18,061.
The findings underscore that while digital payment platforms continue to grow in popularity, a significant share of the population still values keeping tangible currency available for both convenience and security reasons.
