A dog in County Fermanagh played a crucial role in saving her owner’s life during a cardiac arrest incident earlier this year. Polly, a golden retriever, alerted her owner’s wife to the emergency at their home in March 2024, leading to prompt medical intervention that likely prevented a fatal outcome.

Hannah Cooke recounted how the family’s life changed on a Monday night when her husband, Adam, suffered a sudden cardiac arrest while sleeping. At approximately 1:30 a.m., Polly’s unusual barking woke Hannah, who found Adam unconscious and struggling to breathe beside her. Acting on guidance from emergency services, she performed CPR for several minutes until paramedics arrived.

Adam was transported to the hospital, where he remained in intensive care for three weeks. Throughout this period, Polly’s distress was evident, and the family credits the dog’s early warning with saving Adam’s life. "If she hadn’t woken me as quickly as she did, I dread to think what would have happened," Hannah said, highlighting Polly’s keen sensitivity to her environment.

Adam and Hannah had acquired Polly as a puppy several years prior. The golden retriever quickly bonded with Adam, accompanying him on morning runs and becoming a constant companion.
