Pope Leo XIV is set to undertake his scheduled trip to Latin America from November 6 to 17, visiting Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru, the Vatican announced on Monday. This decision follows medical evaluations that found no health-related obstacles to the pope’s travel, despite occurring just three weeks after surgery for lung cancer.
The Vatican press office stated that the pontiff’s recovery is progressing as expected, based on assessments from his medical team. The itinerary for the visit remains unchanged, indicating no adjustments to the planned engagements and activities during his time in the region.
On October 13, Pope Leo underwent surgery to remove a lung lobe containing a nodule that was subsequently diagnosed as malignant. The operation marked the first significant health event since the pope began his pontificate 17 months ago. Medical reports confirmed the diagnosis as adenocarcinoma, the most common form of lung cancer.
The Vatican’s confirmation of the pope’s travel plans underscores a commitment to maintaining his international engagements despite recent health challenges. The forthcoming visit will continue to be closely monitored by medical professionals accompanying the pontiff.
