The Office for National Statistics (ONS) released data on the most popular baby names in England and Wales for 2025, revealing trends in naming preferences across the country. A total of 585,396 live births were registered last year, comprising 300,715 boys and 284,681 girls.
For boys, the name Noah ranked first, followed by Leo in third place, with Noah overtaking Leo to claim the top spot. The rest of the top ten boys’ names included Luca, Arthur, Oliver, George, Oscar, Theodore, and Freddy. Among the girls, Olivia maintained its position as the most popular name, while Amelia and Lily occupied second and third places, respectively, having switched rankings compared to the previous year. Other names completing the top ten for girls were Isla, Florence, Freya, Poppy, Elsie, Ivy, and Isabella.
Together, the top ten names for each gender accounted for 9.1% of all births registered in 2025. The ONS noted several new entrants into the top 100 lists. For boys, Vincent, Carter, Stanley, and Ruben made their way into the rankings, while Eliana, Gracie, Anaya, Alba, Marnie, Lilah, and Frankie rose into the top 100 for girls.
Certain names saw significant increases in popularity. Among boys, Roman experienced the largest rise, moving up 33 places, followed by Harry, which climbed 26 places, and Finley, up 25 spots. On the girls’ side, Ada showed the most notable gain, jumping 54 places, with Maeve and Charlotte both rising 24 places.
Conversely, some names fell out of the top 100 this year. For boys, Bodhi, Grayson, and Brody were no longer in the top rankings, while among girls, Jessica, Ellie, and Amelie dropped out.
The ONS clarified that the rankings are determined based on the exact spellings provided at birth registration. Variants of the same name with different spellings are counted separately, which can influence the overall positioning of similar names.
