The Portland Timbers ended a seven-match winless stretch with a dramatic 3-2 victory over Charlotte FC on Saturday night at home. Alexander Aravena scored the decisive goal in the sixth minute of second-half stoppage time, sealing the comeback win for Portland.
The game-winning goal came from a well-executed set piece in the final moments. Ian Smith delivered a left-footed corner kick into the penalty area, where Cole Bassett connected with a header that redirected the ball toward the left side of the net. Aravena, positioned near the goal line, managed to head the ball into the net, securing the Timbers’ victory on the final play.
Ariel Lassiter contributed significantly to Portland’s offense by scoring twice, helping the team rally against Charlotte FC. With the win, the Timbers improved their record to 10 wins, 14 losses, and 7 draws, accumulating 37 points and moving within three points of the Western Conference’s final playoff spot.
Currently sitting in 11th place in the Western Conference standings, Portland remains behind the Los Angeles Galaxy, who hold the ninth and final postseason position with 40 points, and Real Salt Lake, in 10th place with 39 points. The Timbers’ victory marks a crucial step in their effort to climb the standings and secure a playoff berth ahead of the season’s closing matches.
