In the Suffolk countryside near the village of Laxfield, a unique holiday retreat offers visitors an immersive nature experience combined with modern comforts. Blyth Rise Stays features a collection of accommodations on a 10-acre former arable site converted by apple farmers Pam and Mark Grinstead over the past 25 years.

Originally purchased as a private family escape, the Grinsteads planted more than 2,000 native trees, seeded wildflowers and grasses, and constructed a small lake. In 2020, they expanded the property’s use to holiday rentals, initially building six wooden lodges by the lake before adding six distinctive woodland accommodations known as Igluhuts.

The Igluhuts, handcrafted in Estonia by Iglucraft, resemble wooden Airstream trailers with curved, hand-tacked spruce shingle exteriors designed to blend harmoniously into the surroundings. Each hut, named after one of the trees planted on the property—Alder, Willow, Birch, Larch, Hazel, and Hornbeam—features a kitchenette and a large window at the foot of the bed, providing guests with unobstructed views of the wildlife.

Transported from Estonia to Suffolk and carefully installed on the site, the Igluhuts require regular maintenance such as oiling every six to twelve months. The natural setting attracts various species, including birds that have been seen nesting near the huts. This remote yet well-appointed accommodation aims to offer an intimate encounter with the countryside while maintaining the conveniences travelers expect.

Visitors have reported frequent sightings of local fauna such as pheasants, woodpeckers, crows, blue tits, and hares, which contribute to the feeling of being embedded within the landscape. Despite its rural location and the apparent isolation, Blyth Rise serves as a base for day trips to nearby sites, including the Suffolk coast’s Shingle Street, though many guests prefer the tranquility of returning to the retreat.

Onsite amenities include an honesty shop stocked with locally sourced firewood, toiletries, and food, allowing guests to support themselves during their stay. The property encourages low-impact and sustainable tourism, maintaining the peaceful environment that fosters close observation of nature, including stargazing opportunities enhanced by minimal light pollution.

Rates for the Woodland Igluhuts start at £395 for a two-night weekend stay, with longer midweek and weekly options available. The accommodations are designed for two occupants, offering a blend of rustic charm and thoughtful design to appeal to those seeking a countryside getaway framed by natural beauty and wildlife.
