The owner of Poundland has appointed three new directors to support the discount retailer amid ongoing sale negotiations. Gordon Brothers, which acquired Poundland last year, initiated a sale process for the high-street chain in recent weeks, with sources indicating a potential deal could be finalized as early as next week.

To strengthen the management team during this critical period, Gordon Brothers brought in Andrew Kirkpatrick, Stephen Welch, and Dominic Young as directors. Kirkpatrick previously served as an adviser to Steinhoff International, the South African company that formerly owned Poundland. Welch is a restructuring specialist and chairman of fintech firm FNZ, while Young has experience as a former director of The Spectator magazine.

These appointments are intended to provide additional expertise in mergers and acquisitions, as well as industry knowledge, to navigate the potential sale effectively. The move coincides with increasing interest from various suitors considering either acquisition of the entire business or specific parts of it.

Among the parties expressing interest is the Irish real estate firm Martin Property Group. Additionally, CDS Superstores, which owns The Range, has emerged as a contender, with its founder, billionaire retailer Chris Dawson, reportedly exploring the possibility of acquiring sections of Poundland. Dawson has a history of expanding his retail portfolio, having previously acquired Wilko and Homebase.

As talks continue, the future structure and ownership of Poundland remain uncertain, with potential outcomes ranging from full sale to partial divestments. The involvement of directors with backgrounds in restructuring and corporate advisory roles suggests a focus on positioning the business attractively for prospective buyers during a competitive bidding process.
