Jackson Koivun secured his first professional victory at the 3M Open on Sunday, delivering a commanding performance to finish three shots ahead of world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler. The 21-year-old Californian set a new tournament scoring record at 25-under-par 259 in just his third start as a professional, signaling his emergence as a rising talent on the PGA Tour.

Koivun, who turned professional last month after delaying graduation through the PGA University program to prepare for the transition, maintained composure despite pressure from Scheffler, who recorded an impressive eight-under 63 on the final day. Scheffler’s late charge marked his 41st round of 64 or lower over the past five years—17 more than second-place Eric Cole—and earned him his fifth runner-up finish of the season.

“I just tried to tone that out and keep playing the golf I knew I could,” Koivun said after the win, referencing the crowd’s growing anticipation as Scheffler narrowed the gap. Koivun’s closing round of 66 saw him hit 21 consecutive greens in regulation, building upon his previous day’s 61 to close strong. The victory propelled him to 70th in the FedEx Cup standings, placing him just inside the projected cutoff for the opening playoff event in Memphis in three weeks.

“That’s the position we all strive to be in,” Koivun added. “Once you’re finally in it, you’ve just got to keep your head down and commit to every single golf shot.” He described the winning moment as a rare instance to show emotion amid a week focused on staying level-headed.

Séamus Power also posted a solid showing at the event, recording his first individual top-10 finish of the season by tying for 10th place at 17-under-par. The West Waterford native began the final round six shots behind Koivun and managed to birdie early holes but was unable to close the gap, finishing with a 68. Power earned $222,200 (€195,200) for his effort and moved up 11 spots to 104th in the FedEx Cup standings.

With two regular-season tournaments remaining—the Rocket Mortgage Classic and the Wyndham Championship—both Koivun and Power are positioned to contend for a spot within the top 70 players who will advance to the FedEx Cup playoffs. Power’s current ranking leaves him just outside full exemption for next season, underscoring the importance of his upcoming performances.
