Qatar has made notable strides in incorporating population dynamics into its economic and social development strategies, according to a United Nations official. Progress has been observed in key areas including healthcare, education, gender equality, and women’s participation in the workforce.
Jocelyn Fenard, representative of the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Office, made these remarks during Qatar National Population Day 2026. The annual event was hosted by Qatar’s National Planning Council in collaboration with UNFPA, the Permanent Population Committee, and the Ministry of Public Health.
Fenard emphasized Qatar’s growing capacity to analyze demographic trends and apply this understanding to economic planning. He noted the country’s sustained development in sectors vital to societal well-being, underscoring the role of population data in shaping policy and public services.
Describing the National Population Day as a crucial platform for discourse on population issues, Fenard highlighted the longstanding support and participation of UNFPA in the initiative. The agency operates in over 150 countries, focusing on public health and population challenges within development and humanitarian contexts.
Within Qatar and the broader GCC region, UNFPA collaborates with governments to promote progress toward the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those related to population shifts and the empowerment of women and girls.
Fenard pointed to improvements in healthcare infrastructure, educational access, and social protection programs, alongside advances in gender equality and the integration of women into the labor market as key indicators of Qatar’s development trajectory.
He stressed the importance of viewing population trends not merely as statistical data but as vital determinants influencing economic plans, healthcare and education service demands, and workforce policies. Effective integration of these factors into national strategies is essential for fostering sustainable development.
Qatar National Population Day thereby serves as an opportunity to enhance cooperation among national agencies and international partners, advancing dialogue on population-related challenges and opportunities. Fenard’s remarks reinforced the value of continued collaboration between Qatar and UNFPA in supporting the country’s development priorities and achieving the SDGs, with a focus on issues affecting women and girls.
