Australia’s Energy Minister Chris Bowen met with Chinese Ecology and Environment Minister Huang Runqiu at Uluru on Thursday to discuss collaborative efforts ahead of the United Nations climate change summit, COP31, scheduled for November.
Mr Bowen, who currently serves as president of the COP negotiations, emphasized the importance of fostering international cooperation on energy security and economic opportunities as the world transitions towards net-zero emissions. The discussion with Minister Huang centered on the potential to strengthen energy security while reducing reliance on fossil fuels, according to a statement issued by Mr Bowen’s office.
This meeting builds on previous engagements between Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Chinese Premier Li Qiang in April, reflecting ongoing diplomatic efforts to align climate strategies between the two countries. Australia assumed the presidency of COP negotiations following a compromise with Turkey, who secured the hosting rights for this year’s conference in Adelaide.
The two ministers agreed to collaborate in the lead-up to COP31 to advance emissions reduction targets and explore avenues for enhancing trade and economic opportunities both within their countries and globally. Mr Bowen noted that increased cooperation with one of the world’s largest economies would contribute to strengthening global energy security and help shield households from fluctuations in global energy prices.
“In leading global climate negotiations, Australia is driving practical international action and working with our major trade partners to unlock the economic opportunities of electrification, which is putting downward pressure on energy bills,” Mr Bowen said.
He also expressed eagerness to engage constructively with all international partners as preparations continue for the annual climate conference. The upcoming COP31 will bring together nations to assess progress towards the goals set under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and to negotiate further commitments aimed at mitigating global warming.
