Users between the ages of 18 and 21 have traded approximately $5.4 billion on the prediction market platform Kalshi so far this year, according to an analysis of platform data. This demographic, which is legally restricted from gambling on sportsbooks in most U.S. jurisdictions, has been actively engaging in a variety of betting activities on the site.
Kalshi, which has experienced rapid growth in recent years, enables users to place bets on a wide range of events, including entertainment outcomes such as the next actor to play James Bond, as well as geopolitical developments like the timeline for a potential nuclear deal between the United States and Iran. The platform also offers sports betting options, including parlays—bundled bets that must all win to yield a payout—which collectively represent 80% of Kalshi’s total trading volume.
The analysis indicates that young users in this age bracket have traded nearly $3.9 billion in sports-related bets and parlays alone during 2026, with this amount expected to continue rising. Kalshi has implemented certain measures aimed at promoting responsible trading among younger users, such as educational resources, age verification processes, and restrictions on payment methods, including the prohibition of credit card use. A spokesperson for the company emphasized that their exchange-based model differs significantly from traditional sportsbooks and is regarded by many users as a healthier alternative.
Broader behavioral trends among young investors may help explain this surge in activity on Kalshi. A recent survey conducted by Betterment involving 1,000 Gen Z investors revealed that more than half have diverted funds originally allocated for long-term investment strategies toward sports betting. This shift suggests evolving attitudes toward risk and investment among younger demographics in the current financial environment.
The growing participation of underage users in large-scale trading on platforms like Kalshi raises questions for regulators and industry observers about the effectiveness of existing age restrictions and consumer protections in the increasingly complex digital betting landscape.
