Prescribing exercise to patients with coronary heart disease can significantly reduce hospital admissions and the risk of further cardiac events, according to a new analysis by researchers at the University of Glasgow. The study suggests that physical activity interventions could lower hospital admissions by 35 percent and reduce the incidence of heart attacks by 28 percent.

The researchers reviewed data from 107 clinical trials involving 26,886 individuals diagnosed with coronary heart disease, a condition characterized by the narrowing or blockage of arteries supplying blood to the heart. Most participants had experienced a heart attack, angina (chest pain), or undergone a cardiac procedure. In the context of approximately 100,000 annual hospital admissions for heart attacks in the UK alone, these findings highlight the potential impact of exercise-based rehabilitation programs on public health.

Dr. Grace Dibben, a member of the research team, emphasized the safety and importance of exercise following cardiac events. She noted that many patients lack confidence in engaging in physical activity post-event due to concerns about potential risks. “Appropriately prescribed exercise is not only safe for most patients, but can play a vital role in recovery and long-term heart health,” she said.

The study also found that home-based cardiac rehabilitation programs, often delivered through digital platforms, were as effective as traditional in-person sessions. This suggests a greater opportunity to expand access to exercise-based interventions, particularly for patients who face barriers to attending rehabilitation centers. Despite these benefits, Dr. Dibben and her colleagues pointed out that such programs remain underfunded and lack prioritization within healthcare systems.

The analysis adds to growing evidence supporting exercise-based rehabilitation as a cost-effective strategy for managing coronary heart disease and improving patient outcomes. Researchers advocate for increased investment and broader implementation of home-based and digital exercise programs to help reduce the burden of heart disease on healthcare services and improve quality of life for patients.
