President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday emphasized the importance of safeguarding girls' rights, promoting their education, and eliminating child marriage during a program held at Bangladesh Shishu Academy to mark International and National Girl Child Day 2026. The event’s theme, "No More Child Marriage, Girls Will Conquer the World," underscored the commitment to ending practices that hinder girls’ development and potential.
Addressing attendees, President Fakhrul described child marriage as a violation that prematurely ends childhood, disrupts education, and wastes potential. He called for a multi-faceted approach involving the government, families, and society to protect girls and provide opportunities for their advancement.
He highlighted the critical need to ensure girls’ safety in various environments, including while traveling to and from school, within educational institutions, and online, particularly on social media platforms. The president stressed the urgency of prompt investigations and the enforcement of laws related to violence against women and children, including cases of rape and sexual harassment. He stated that a zero-tolerance policy must be strictly applied in addressing these crimes.
In addition to government action, President Fakhrul urged families and children to familiarize themselves with national helplines—1099, 1089, and 999—that are available to offer rapid assistance in emergencies. He noted that timely intervention through a single phone call can be crucial in protecting a child’s life and preserving their childhood.
President Fakhrul reiterated that education for girls is a fundamental right and that ensuring their safety is a shared responsibility between families, communities, and the state. Advocating for a shift in societal attitudes, he described the birth of a girl child not as a burden but as an opportunity filled with limitless possibilities. He encouraged people to view girls as valuable assets and prospective leaders rather than liabilities.
The president’s remarks align with ongoing national efforts to improve gender equality and child welfare, reinforcing a commitment to creating a safer and more supportive environment for girls across Bangladesh.
