President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has called for enhancing the quality of education at Dhaka University with the aim of positioning it among the world’s leading universities. The appeal came during a meeting on Sunday at Bangabhaban, where a delegation from Dhaka University, headed by Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. A.B.M. Obaidul Islam, paid a courtesy visit to the President, according to a statement from the President’s Press Secretary Md. Sarwar Alam.
During the discussion, President Alamgir underscored the university’s role as not only the premier institution of higher education in Bangladesh but also a central hub for the country’s political, historical, cultural, and heritage identity. He emphasized the importance of strengthening democratic practices, noting that democracy is cultivated through consistent engagement and underscored the necessity of free, fair, and impartial elections in this process.
Highlighting the need for providing space to opposition and political rivals, the President stated that such inclusivity is vital for effective democracy, describing it as an intrinsic aspect of democratic culture.
In response, Vice-Chancellor Dr. Obaidul Islam congratulated Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on his recent appointment as President of the party and outlined the university’s ongoing academic programs and accomplishments. He also extended a formal invitation to the President to serve as the Chancellor at Dhaka University’s upcoming 54th convocation ceremony.
President Alamgir accepted the invitation and assured his participation in the event.
