President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir emphasized the need for world-class healthcare services in Bangladesh during the inauguration of the "Colorectal Surgery Conference 2026" held on Tuesday at the Shaheed Abu Sayeed International Convention Centre in Dhaka. He highlighted that many Bangladeshi patients continue to seek medical treatment abroad due to shortcomings in the country’s specialized healthcare infrastructure, limited access to advanced medical technologies, and concerns regarding service quality and patient confidence.
Addressing these challenges, the president underscored the financial burden borne by patients and the nation due to the outflow of funds spent on overseas medical care. He stressed the importance of strengthening domestic healthcare facilities as a means to reduce this trend and improve accessibility to quality treatment within Bangladesh.
Mirza Fakhrul called for the development of a modern, affordable, and patient-centred healthcare system, which would require enhancing service standards, recruiting skilled specialist doctors, embracing cutting-edge technologies, and fostering greater accountability within the sector. He also highlighted the humanitarian aspect of medical care, describing medicine as a noble responsibility that involves preserving human life, dignity, and hope.
The two-day conference aims to bring together experts in colorectal surgery to share knowledge and advance medical practices in Bangladesh, aligning with the broader goal of elevating the country's healthcare standards to meet international benchmarks.
