He and teammate Kaci Rock, who earned a silver medal, had both advanced to an in-person interview stage with the show’s producers in London before McConnell’s focus shifted toward boxing. McConnell indicated he would remain open to future opportunities with the show, stating he is willing to be contacted again.

Reflecting on his decision to prioritize the Games over the reality series, McConnell said that winning gold has validated his choice. “If I had got through the first round maybe I’d have thought I didn’t make the right decision, but I’ve got the gold now,” he remarked.
