Primark has initiated an urgent recall of two Halloween-themed gonk decorations due to potential asbestos contamination. The items, intended as doorstep ornaments, may contain sand with traces of asbestos, a hazardous material linked to serious lung diseases.
The recalled products include one gonk wearing a pumpkin hat and another featuring a witch hat with grey hair. Both have raised safety concerns after the Office for Product Safety and Standards highlighted the health risks posed by asbestos, noting that even low-level exposure can be dangerous.
Consumers who have purchased these decorations are advised to take precautions to minimize risk. The regulatory body recommends sealing the gonks in heavy-duty plastic bags. In cases where sand leakage occurs, individuals should use gloves and a mask while carefully cleaning the area with wet cloths. The affected components should be double-bagged to prevent further contamination.
Owners of the recalled gonks, identified by model numbers 991174794 and 991179148 and barcodes 212047125 and 212080261, are instructed to return the items to Primark. Alternatively, they may contact their local council for assistance with asbestos removal.
Primark has not commented publicly on the matter beyond facilitating the recall and advising customers on safe disposal procedures. Authorities continue to monitor the situation to prevent health risks associated with asbestos exposure from consumer products.
