A prison nurse has admitted to maintaining an inappropriate relationship with a convicted killer while he was incarcerated at HMP Wandsworth in south London. Stephanie Adair, 29, acknowledged the affair with 28-year-old inmate Jakhi Crosdale, which was sustained through contact using an illicit mobile phone, the court heard.
The relationship is reported to have taken place from September 2023 to November 2024, according to testimony at Kingston Crown Court. The existence of their liaison came to light after Crosdale listed Adair’s address on court documents, prompting further investigation.
Crosdale, who appeared via video link from HMP Manchester, also admitted to the unauthorized transmission of images or sound from inside both HMP Wandsworth and HMP Lowdham Grange between February and October 2024. He is currently serving a prison sentence related to the fatal stabbing of trainee plumber Charlie Burns in 2015, a crime stemming from a dispute over a £150 cannabis debt. Crosdale has additional convictions for firearms and drug offenses. He remains on recall until 2029.
Adair, a resident of Southwark, and Crosdale have both been granted bail ahead of their sentencing, which is scheduled for February.
HMP Wandsworth has faced significant criticism in recent years, including being labeled as “England’s worst jail” in 2024 by the Howard League for Penal Reform. The organization highlighted elevated levels of violence within the prison. The facility has been embroiled in similar scandals previously; notably, prison officer Linda De Sousa Abreu was recorded engaging in sexual activity with inmate Linton Weirich.
The ongoing incidents have raised concerns about staff conduct and security measures within the prison system.
