Pro-Palestinian demonstrators disrupted transportation in the San Francisco Bay Area on Monday by temporarily closing the Golden Gate Bridge and obstructing traffic on Interstate 880 in Oakland. The protests were part of a broader wave of demonstrations across the United States expressing opposition to Israel’s military actions in Gaza.
The Golden Gate Bridge was closed to all vehicle, pedestrian, and bicycle traffic for several hours as protesters gathered on the structure. In Oakland, demonstrators chained themselves to 55-gallon drums filled with cement placed across lanes of the busy highway, causing significant traffic delays.
Authorities intervened to clear the blockades, resulting in the arrest of approximately 20 protesters on the bridge. Traffic on the Golden Gate Bridge resumed shortly after noon, according to the California Highway Patrol.
These actions occurred amid mounting domestic protests responding to the ongoing conflict in Gaza, where Israeli military operations have drawn international attention and criticism. Demonstrators in various cities have sought to amplify calls for a ceasefire and to highlight the humanitarian impact of the conflict.
Officials have emphasized the importance of maintaining public safety and access to critical infrastructure while addressing the right to peaceful protest. The incidents on Monday underscore the tensions surrounding the conflict’s repercussions both abroad and within the United States.
