A 62-year-old worker died after falling from a six-meter-high platform while repairing an aircraft at a Hong Kong airport, prompting an investigation by the Labour Department.

Authorities were alerted at 8:35 a.m. on Tuesday to an injury at a site operated by the Hong Kong Aircraft Engineering Company (HAECO). Police said the man was conducting repairs on the fuselage inside a hangar when he fell. Preliminary inquiries suggest he accidentally stepped into a gap between two work platforms, leading to the fall.

Emergency responders found the man unconscious and rushed him to North Lantau Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:07 a.m.

The Labour Department confirmed that it deployed staff immediately after receiving notification of the incident and is now investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident. A department spokesperson said the aim was to determine the cause and to review safety protocols.

HAECO also issued a statement confirming the worker’s death. The company emphasized that it is cooperating fully with authorities and prioritizing support for the deceased employee’s family and colleagues.

This incident adds to the growing number of workplace accidents reported in the region. According to data compiled by the Association for the Rights of Industrial Accident Victims, at least 62 industrial accidents, including 24 fatalities, have occurred in Hong Kong during the first half of this year.

The case continues to be under active investigation as officials seek to understand the factors that led to the fatal fall.
