Professor Mahmood Yakubu, former chairman of Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has arrived in Doha, Qatar, to officially take up his role as Nigeria’s ambassador to the country. His appointment is part of a series of diplomatic postings recently made by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, involving both career and non-career diplomats assigned to various Nigerian missions abroad.

Upon his arrival at Hamad International Airport, Professor Yakubu was greeted by Ambassador Ibrahim Yousif Abdullah Fakhro, Director of the Protocol Department at Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The welcome party also included 13 African ambassadors accredited to Qatar, the Secretary-General of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), Dr. Philip Mshelbila, and Michael Ndukaihe Ihekwaba, president of the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NIDO) Qatar.

In an introduction ceremony, HE Thierno Abdoulaye Sow, Ambassador of the Republic of Guinea and current President of the Bureau of the African Group of Ambassadors to Qatar, formally presented Yakubu to the African diplomatic community in the country.

Nigeria has a growing population of expatriates living and working in Qatar, and members of this community have expressed expectations that Professor Yakubu will address key issues they face. These concerns include streamlined processes for travel document issuance and improved consular services.

Michael Ndukaihe Ihekwaba of NIDO Qatar extended formal greetings to the new ambassador, emphasizing the organization's commitment to collaboration with the embassy. He highlighted the aim of fostering stronger ties between Nigeria and Qatar and advancing the welfare of Nigerians abroad. Ihekwaba expressed optimism that Yakubu’s tenure would enhance bilateral relations and bring mutual benefits for both nations.

The arrival of Professor Yakubu marks a significant moment in Nigeria-Qatar diplomatic engagement, reflecting Nigeria’s efforts to strengthen its foreign missions and better serve its diaspora communities.
