Sir James Cleverly, a prominent Conservative politician with a long-standing career in British politics, has announced his intention to seek the Conservative nomination for the mayoralty of London. Sir James has held several ministerial roles under three different prime ministers, including serving as home secretary and education secretary.

Before entering Parliament, Cleverly represented the Conservative Party on the London Assembly. He was elected as the Member of Parliament for Braintree in 2015 and climbed the party ranks from the backbenches. In 2024, he unsuccessfully contested the Conservative leadership, ultimately losing to Suella Braverman Badenoch.

A source close to Ms Badenoch expressed mixed feelings about Sir James’s leadership bid, describing her as “gutted” that he did not win the party leadership but also “delighted” by his decision to pursue the mayoral candidacy. The London Mayor’s office was contacted for comment but did not provide a statement.

Sir James’s announcement adds to the competitive landscape for the Conservative nomination ahead of the next London mayoral election, highlighting his ongoing ambition to hold significant political office within the capital.
