A new nonstop flight service connecting London Heathrow and Sydney, Australia, is set to launch in October 2027, offering one of the longest direct commercial air routes in history. Operated using Airbus A350-1000ULR (Ultra Long Range) aircraft specially configured to cover distances up to 11,500 miles, the flights will reduce current travel times by nearly three and a half hours, with the fastest journeys expected to take approximately 18 hours and seven minutes.
Currently, the quickest travel options between the two cities involve at least one stop and take around 21 hours and 35 minutes. The introduction of these nonstop flights, part of what is known as Project Sunrise, represents a significant advancement in ultra-long-haul aviation capability.
Tickets for the service will become available starting in February next year. Pricing is projected to be about 20 percent higher than existing flights, with economy return fares expected to start around £1,500. However, industry insiders suggest that fares may rise to between £2,500 and £3,000 due to anticipated demand. By comparison, return tickets on alternative routes operated by Etihad and Emirates currently start at approximately £1,009 and £1,096, respectively, albeit with longer travel times exceeding 21 hours.
Passenger capacity on the Project Sunrise flights will be limited to 238 seats, divided across multiple cabin classes. The initial configuration includes 98 economy seats, 42 in economy plus, 40 in premium economy, 52 in business class, and six first-class suites. Economy seating will feature pitches ranging from 32 to 34 inches, while economy plus seats will offer 33 inches of pitch.
Higher-tier fares are expected to demand a premium. Based on current pricing trends, return fares for premium economy could start around £3,664, business class from £7,851, and first class at approximately £13,922. Peak travel periods may push first-class ticket prices as high as £20,000, according to aviation experts.
Cabin amenities are designed to enhance passenger comfort on these extended flights. First-class suites provide two-meter beds, wide armchairs, and small wardrobe spaces, all presented in muted tones. Premium economy seats will measure 40 inches and include features such as privacy headrests. Additionally, passengers will have access to a dedicated Wellness Zone on board, offering space for stretching and yoga exercises to help mitigate the physical strain of ultra-long flights.
Although the service promises markedly shorter travel times, journey durations will still vary depending on wind conditions. Westbound flights from London to Sydney may range from 18 hours up to 21 hours, while eastbound flights toward London could take between 19 hours 25 minutes and 21 hours.
While the nonstop service offers convenience and speed, it may not be suitable for budget travelers or those sensitive to extended periods in confined spaces. Nevertheless, Project Sunrise is anticipated to mark a milestone in the development of long-haul air travel.
